01 · Why we keep it

Europe's chatbots must say they are an AI. Someone has to look.

Since 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act has required a chatbot to tell people they are talking to an AI. National market surveillance authorities enforce it, country by country.

An authority starts from what it can see. Our survey found that nearly half of Europe's web chats cannot be checked by an automated visit from outside, so a crawl alone will not tell anyone who complies. That finding is useful too: it shows where other tools are needed, such as checking the vendors' default settings and letting people report what they meet. Read why →

A company's name is printed here only after three steps. The Vigilia association is founded. Its committee adopts the publication policy. The organisation receives notice and has thirty days to reply.
